Custom Services

A service you run on the server yourself can be watched by HiTechAdmin: when it stops, the monitor restarts it and tells you, in HiTechAdmin > Notifications and, when email is set up, by email.

In this example we watch Netdata, installed with its own installer as the systemd service netdata.

Install the service

Install it the way its vendor documents for your distribution, so that it runs as a systemd service. Check that systemd knows it:

systemctl status netdata

The name systemd shows (netdata, without .service) is the name HiTechAdmin needs.

We suggest allowing your own IP address on the firewall rather than opening the service's port to the internet.

Watch the service

  1. Open HiTechAdmin > Settings > Notifications (/settings/notifications).
  2. Under Services, type the unit name in Other services: netdata. Several services are separated by commas or spaces, for example netdata, redis-server.
  3. Click Save changes.

The page accepts only unit names (letters, digits and . _ - @ :). The monitor checks every listed service each time it runs; a name this server has no unit for is skipped, so a name kept for another server costs nothing. To stop watching a service, remove its name and save.

The built-in services (HiTechCloud, HiTechAdmin, the front-end, PHP-FPM, MySQL, BIND9 and the firewall) have their own switches on the same page.

Show the service on the Services page

To list the service on HiTechAdmin > Services, so it can be started, stopped and restarted from there, add it on HiTechAdmin > Services > Edit Services (/services/edit).

NOTE

Earlier versions of this article added a Docker container to /root/docker-compose.yml and edited notifications.ini by hand. Both belong to the container architecture, which is retired.
